A few days later, Caffrey walked into Ashbourne Garda Station to tell Gardaí they’d find his body inside a wardrobe in his apartment. He told them Mr. McCarthy had called to his house with a gun in his pocket over what he claimed was a dispute over missing drugs. He claimed a struggle ensued during which he managed to disarm Mr McCarthy, and that the gun just went off.He denied the murder charge, claiming he was acting in self-defence when he killed Mr McCarthy, and after deliberating for just over twelve hours, the jury cleared him of murder but convicted him of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
