Man dies weeks after dozens of bikers beat him in NYC: cops
Arthur Cooke was driving east on East 125th Street near Fifth Avenue just after 10 p.m. Nov. 4 when about 30 ATV and dirt bike riders surrounded him, authorities said. When Cooke stepped out to inspect the damage, the bikers ganged up on him and started beating him, cops said. Moments later, another man who wasn’t involved in the assault hopped in Cooke’s car and drove off, cops said.
Cooke was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was held in the ICU until he succumbed to his injuries Friday. The deadly attack happened on East 125th Street near Fifth Avenue, cops said.Cooke got out of his car to inspect a broken passenger-side mirror when he was attacked, cops said.Cooke was “on a date with his significant other” when he was attacked, according to a GoFundMe page set up for him prior to his death.
“We watched as his mindset shifted from one of hopelessness since serving his sentence to one of hope and aspirations, and he was always helping his participants do the same,” Medina said. “To Arthur, the value of his work was apparent when he got to see the joy that those he helped realized that there is light at the end of the tunnel. That meant everything to Arthur.”
Cooke served four years in state prison – from 2017 to 2021 – on an assault charge, state Correction records show. His previous prison stint was from 2009 to 2013 on robbery, assault and arson charges, according to the records.
