Emergency services were called to Shelly Beach about 1.50pm after a group of six people got into difficulty.A spokesperson for Surf Lifesaving NSW said two jet skis were deployed, one from the Sydney branch and another from the Sutherland branch. The surf lifesavers on the jet skis located two unconscious men in the water and took one patient each into shore just after 2pm. They conducted CPR on both men until paramedics arrived, but one man died at the scene. The second unconscious man was taken to St George Hospital, while a third man was also rescued and taken to the same hospital in a stable condition.Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command were conducting inquiries and will prepare a report for the coroner.
It has been a tragic month on NSW beaches, with Saturday’s drowning coming just nine days after a 45-year-old father drowned while trying to rescue his daughter from the surf at Lennox Head, and just five days after an Australian man lost his life in New Zealand while trying to rescue a child at Lake Wakatipu.
