A man has died in hospital after being shot on the street in Melbourne’s east just before midnight on Friday.

The man was reportedly walking along Almeida Crescent in South Yarra when a number of shots were fired at about 11.40pm. He sustained life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital.

The area surrounding the incident was cordoned off, and a crime scene has been established in South Yarra while police investigate the incident on Saturday.
