A Malaysian man has been charged with intentionally injuring his eye to claim a large insurance payout. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
A 52-year-old man named Tan Kok Guan was charged at the Butterworth Magistrate's Court yesterday for intentionally injuring his eye to claim an insurance payout of RM1 million in June last year. According to a Harian Metro report, Tan, who is partially sighted in his left eye, pleaded not guilty to both charges. The first charge alleges that Tan made a fraudulent insurance claim for an accident by deliberately injuring his left eye to receive a RM1 million payout.
The alleged offense took place at Kampung Gajah between 9am and 6pm on June 8, 2023. The second charge alleges that Tan cheated an insurance company by making a fraudulent insurance claim, resulting in RM4,153.57 being deposited into his account. The alleged offense took place at Kampung Paya between 9am and 6pm on July 20, 2023. Both charges were brought under Section 420 of the Penal Code. If found guilty, Tan faces a prison sentence of not less than one year and not more than 10 years, as well as caning and a fine
