Cape Breton Regional Police. CONTRIBUTEDSYDNEY, N.S. — A 41-year-old man was charged on Friday following a pair of suspected break-and-enters on Sept. 6 and 7 in Sydney Mines.
John Joseph Hawkins appeared at Sydney Provincial Court after Cape Breton Regional Police officers arrested him earlier this week. He was charged with break and enter, mischief, possession of break-in instruments, theft over $5,000 and theft under $5,000. On Sept. 7, officers responded to a report of a break-in at MacPhee Metals in Sydney Mines. CBRP said employees found the door had been forced open overnight and cash was gone from a safe at the building. Officers identified a suspect through video surveillance.
Police were called to the nearby Foodland not long after the call from MacPhee Metals. Employees had video footage of someone taking merchandise the prior evening — which officers said was the same suspect from MacPhee Metals. Officers located Hawkins at a Sydney Mines residence and arrested him.
