Charges were withdrawn on June 6 against Elmer Hanson, 46, after he died from a suspected drug overdose last month, his lawyer confirmed.
“His death is another tragic reminder that the complexities with the respect to addiction cannot be solved exclusively by the criminal justice system,” Pfefferle said.
He confirmed Hanson and Ternan were in a relationship. According to police, the pair was charged in connection with drug trafficking after more than 24,000 Schedule 1 narcotics were unaccounted for from the pharmacy’s inventory between September 2022 and January 2023.The investigation began in January, when 700 pharmaceutical grade and uncut Oxycodone pills were seized at three locations and connected to Ternan and the Northumberland Pharmacy.
Ternan, 41, faces two counts of trafficking in a controlled Schedule 1 substance, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking a Schedule 1 substance, and one count each of possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000, unsafe storage of a firearm and failing to hold a firearm licence. Her pharmacy licence was suspended and she was released on conditions after her first court appearance. Her next court date is scheduled for June 27.
Pfefferle said Hanson is one of six former and current clients who have died of either a confirmed or suspected overdose this year while awaiting the conclusion of their court cases.
