Police arrested a 39-year-old unemployed man suspected of being involved in a drug trafficking syndicate and seized methamphetamine and heroin worth RM204,000 during a raid at a house in Bukit Mertajam early this morning. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the suspect was apprehended in front of his house at 4.15 am following police intelligence and information.
'A search of a motorcycle believed to belong to the man found a plastic bag containing five packages of methamphetamine estimated to weigh 6.1 kilograms and a package of heroin weighing 900 grams,' he said in a statement today. He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been active in the drug trade since September last year, using areas around Penang as its main market. The syndicate is believed to have obtained its supply of methamphetamine and heroin from existing drug distribution networks before repackaging it. 'Urine tests found that the man was positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). He also has a criminal record related to drugs,' he said. He said the man was remanded until January 9 this year for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952
