On Wednesday, police announced they had charged the man with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with two homicides from 2009.

A man charged with first-degree murder in the 2009 death of Morgan Doucette made his first appearance in court after being arrested in Alberta, where he was serving an unrelated charge. Her family, including six of Morgan’s seven children, had just watched the 32-year-old man accused of killing Morgan appear on a video screen from Grand Cache Institution in Alberta.
There is a statutory publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act that prevents identifying accused people under the age of 18. Since the man was 17 at the time of the first offence, his identity cannot be revealed.Doucette said she doesn’t know much about what led police to make an arrest 14 years later. She also said she didn’t know her brother’s accused killer was serving an unrelated murder sentence until she came to court.
“Do we want justice? Yes, anyone going through anything like this would want justice, but mainly we want healing and closure. We don’t want to hold bad feelings toward the accused. We are on our own healing journey, and wishing bad things on anyone will not help us. Our hope is that the accused can receive the help needed to heal whatever it is that brings out the violence,” Doucette said.
