Man, 33, dies days after deputies find him unresponsive in Vista jail cell [Breaking]
A 33-year-old man found unresponsive in his Vista jail cell last week died over the weekend, sheriff’s officials said Monday.Deputies found him alone in his cell about 10 a.m. Wednesday, homicide Lt. Chris Steffen said in a news release. Per policy, sheriff’s homicide detectives investigate all deaths in local jails.Deputies and jail medical staffers responded, began life-saving measures and administered naloxone, a drug that is designed to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Last year, a record 19 people died in San Diego County jail custody, and a 20th person who had been long hospitalized died shortly after he was released for medial reasons. In 2021, the state auditor investigated local jails, a probe prompted by 185 deaths in the county jails over 15 years., found the Sheriff’s Department failed to prevent and respond to the deaths.
The Sheriff’s Department initially pushed back on the audit, but has since said it is working to make the changes.
