Former principal of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school principal Malka Leifer will be sentenced over the abuse of students this morning.
To understand the true nature of the offending by Leifer, it is important to understand the background and context of the offending, Judge Mark Gamble has told the court.
“Each was mistreated and witnessed the mistreatment of their siblings. Their mother neglected and abused her children regularly, both physically and emotionally,” he said. But the control their mother held over them was relinquished when the principal at their ultra-Orthodox school, Malka Leifer, intervened to request their attendance at school, school outings or at her own home.Gamble said the victims gave evidence during the trial that the school was a safe haven, until the sexual abuse began.
“The complainants, ignorance and sexual matters continued well into their late teenage years, and until shortly before they got married,” Gamble said.County Court Judge Mark Gamble has started sentencing Malka Leifer, beginning with the verdicts the jury handed down in April. “The credibility and reliability of each complainant was challenged by the defence and very much in issue. It is clear from the verdict delivered in this case that the jury accepted the credibility and reliability [of the victims],” Gamble said.The judge is now going into the background of the case and the victims’ family.
