There, Krimper café was established in an over 100-year-old converted warehouse that has lived many lives. It was a sawmill, a cabinet-making factory and at one point even posed as the Guildford Lane Gallery, a contemporary exhibition and performance space. The brainchild of Malaysian-born and renowned Melbourne-based architect Mun Soon, the concept behind the Krimper café was to allow the history of the building to define its character and tell its own story.
The large industrial space also boasts a rich history with reclaimed materials such as recycled lift doors, old timer pieces from the original site, and even a 100-year-old lift car and mechanical wheels repurposed to make up the tabletops and a booth. Giving credence to this history, the café is named after revered furniture maker Schulim Krimper, who never occupied the space but whose work is admired deeply by Mun Soon.
