A Malaysian woman on Threads expressed shock over a RM400 monthly fee for a carpool service to transport her child to school, sparking debate about the cost of private transportation for children.
A Malaysia n woman, energy_baz, took to her Threads account to express her astonishment over a carpool service charging RM400 per month to transport her child to school from Mondays to Fridays. The quote shocked her, prompting her to inquire about the typical price range for such services, particularly for a one-way journey of less than 10km.
energy_baz clarified that she only required the service for the morning school drop-off and that she had initially been looking for van or bus transportation. Intrigued, she checked the rates for e-hailing services like Grab during the same time frame and found them considerably cheaper, ranging from RM9 to RM10 for a single trip. This translates to a monthly cost of RM200. She questioned the rationale behind the RM400 charge, especially considering the short distance (6.4km one-way) and the fact that e-hailing services offered a more affordable alternative. She mentioned that her residence was in a new development outside a city center and that she was surprised by the significant price difference. While some online users criticized her for considering the price exorbitant, many others assumed that the service involved a private car dedicated solely to her child, not a shared carpool arrangement. Others, however, voiced support for her stance, emphasizing that RM400 for a single child's transport seems unreasonable. They pointed out that parents might be willing to pay high prices due to a lack of alternatives, but that such practices shouldn't be normalized. They also questioned the justification for charging such a premium, especially when the service primarily involves drop-offs and pick-ups. The debate sparked a conversation about the cost of private transportation services for children and the potential for exploitation in the absence of more affordable and accessible options
