MetMalaysia predicts mostly sunny skies for Chinese New Year, with rain expected in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan. A monsoon surge lasting until March is also anticipated, potentially bringing heavy rain to eastern states.
MetMalaysia predicts largely clear skies over most of the Malaysian peninsula for the first two days of Chinese New Year, with isolated thunderstorms possible in the afternoon for Perak, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan. However, those in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan can expect scattered thunderstorms and rain throughout the day. The department also forecasts a monsoon surge lasting until Thursday, potentially bringing heavy and continuous rain to Sabah and Sarawak.
A continuous rain alert is already in effect for these territories. This surge is expected to last until March before the country transitions into the inter-monsoon period. The northeast monsoon caused significant damage in November with prolonged rainfall resulting in devastating floods, displacing thousands. MetMalaysia also indicates a 59% probability of the La Nina phenomenon forming this month, followed by a return to neutral conditions between March and May. The department's weather outlook for up to June predicts several heavy rain episodes for Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah until February. It also anticipates hot and dry weather in northern peninsula states with a possibility of heatwaves in the coming months
