Bernice Wong makes mesmerising masterpieces, proving that dreams can be built grain by grain.
Bernice Wong, an Ipoh-born Penangite, is now a performing sand artist with some international renown.
Unless you already know something about sand art, you’ll think this is some kind of madness. But you’ll get your aha moment in a matter of seconds because Wong’s fingers are deft.Wong was inspired to learn all about sand art after watching a live performance in Genting Highlands. Last year, she had a joint performance with the National Symphony Orchestra at Istana Budaya. Earlier this year, she performed at Monash University’s silver jubilee dinner.
While working at a bank, she met her future husband and manager, Jeffrey Ch’ng, a performing magician. Upon returning home, she watched hours of sand art tutorials on YouTube and soon began experimenting with every possible material. “I tried using sand, salt, sugar, flour. I spent a lot of time on that.”
