Padi farmers in Malaysia have expressed their disappointment over the recent increase in the floor price for padi, which has been set at RM1,500 per tonne. While they acknowledge the government's efforts to address their concerns, they argue that the increase is insufficient to offset the rising production costs they face.
Abdul Rashid Yob, the chairman of the Malaysia Padi Farmers Brotherhood Association (PeSawah), which represents padi farmer associations nationwide, stated that only 20% of the subsidies would benefit farmers as padi price incentives. He emphasized that the current price increase falls short of covering the escalating expenses, particularly due to the removal of diesel subsidies and the hike in seed prices anticipated in 2024.PeSawah had been advocating for a floor price of RM1,800 per tonne, asserting that it is a reasonable and necessary measure to ensure the continued sustainability of rice production in the country. They urge the Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, to reconsider their request and implement more substantial support measures for rice farmers. The association proposes an additional RM300 incentive on top of the announced RM1,500 floor price and a reduction in the controlled price of certified rice seeds from RM58 to RM35, aligning it with the pre-March 2024 price.This proposal stems from the fact that the recent seed price increase was justified by the RM1,700 purchase price offered by mills for rice, which has since decreased. PeSawah expresses hope that the government will address their concerns and provide the necessary support, recognizing the crucial role rice farmers play in the nation's food security. They warn that without adequate assistance, the sustainability of rice production in Malaysia could be jeopardized. Abdul Rashid further highlights the core issue of the subsidy system, stating that the rice price has not been reviewed in 17 years, making annual increases essential to cover the costs associated with controlled pricing.
