Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, the third Malaysian mixed doubles pair, exited the 2025 Malaysia Open in the first round after losing to Japan's Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers are facing a series of setbacks at the 2025 Malaysia Open. Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing became the third Malaysian mixed doubles pair to exit the tournament in the first round after losing to Hiroki Midorikawa-Natsu Saito. The world No. 19 pair fell to the No. 14 ranked Japanese duo 20-22, 10-21 in a 37-minute match. This defeat further extends Midorikawa-Saito's winning record against Kian Meng-Pei Jing to 3-0.

Pei Jing expressed that the first set was a major loss due to their inability to capitalize on opportunities, allowing the opponents to gain valuable points and win comfortably. Kian Meng-Pei Jing, who have expressed their desire to retire, might make their final appearance at the All England in March depending on whether they secure further sponsorships. If this plan comes to fruition, the Malaysia Open would be their final tournament on home soil. Besides Kian Meng-Pei Jing, the pairs Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien also reached only the 32nd best. - UTUSA
