A Kuala Terengganu High Court judge upheld a previous sentence against a Besut District Council planning officer who was found guilty of receiving a bribe. The officer, Zariman Ibrahim, was ordered to serve a three-month jail sentence and pay a RM10,000 fine.

The Kuala Terengganu High Court upheld a three-month jail sentence and a RM10,000 fine against a town and village planning officer from the Besut District Council (MDB) who was found guilty of receiving a bribe of RM4,500 six years ago. Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani made the decision after rejecting the appeal filed by Zariman Ibrahim, 44, against the sentence. He also ordered the jail sentence against the man to begin yesterday.

Earlier, Zariman was sentenced to two months in prison and a RM10,000 fine for the bribery offense by Judge Dazuki Ali at the Sessions Court here on August 17, 2023. According to the charge, the officer was accused of receiving the bribe from a man who had a connection with his official duties. He was accused of receiving the bribe of RM4,500 through his personal bank account on September 4, 2018. Zariman was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a sentence of up to two years in prison or a fine or both, if found guilty. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM), Farah Yasmin Salleh, while the accused was represented by lawyer, Mohd. Zamri Md.
