Malaysian comedian and actor Harith Iskander and his family have received severe threats, leading to the cancellation of his stand-up comedy program 'Punchline: Harith Iskander 35 Years of Laughter'. The threats stem from a Facebook post by Harith regarding a 'ham sap' coffee, which sparked accusations of insulting Islam. Police have arrested a 31-year-old suspect and are investigating the threats under sections 506 and 509 of the Penal Code.
Petaling Jaya police arrested a 31-year-old man accused of threatening comedian and actor Harith Iskander and his family today. According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, the suspect was arrested after the comedian's manager filed a police report at Dang Wangi Police Station at 7.31 pm yesterday. He said that the suspect contacted the victim while he was at a location in Masjid India at 11.21 am on Tuesday.
Razarudin said that the victim received serious threats following the comedian's statement regarding a post on his Facebook account about the issue of 'ham' which was alleged to be insulting to Islam. 'The second incident occurred at 3 pm yesterday while his manager was at a nasi lemak restaurant on Jalan Bunus 6, here. 'The victim reported receiving a picture of his child with a threatening message,' he said. Razarudin said that the suspect was remanded starting today until January 28th to assist in the investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 509 of the same code. In addition, the police also seized the suspect's mobile phone to assist in the investigation. Earlier, this newspaper reported that Harith Iskander's family received severe threats, leading to the cancellation of the stand-up comedy program 'Punchline: Harith Iskander 35 Years of Laughter'. This was revealed by his wife and manager, Dr. Jezamine Lim, who stated that her family received very cruel threats, especially towards their children. On January 21st, Harith was accused of posting a picture showing a glass of coffee called 'ham sap' coffee priced at RM5.50. The post was alleged to have opened the way to mocking Islam when a social media user left a comment on the post believed to be linking 'ham' to the name of Prophet Muhammad SAW. - UTUSA
