A Malaysian citizen was seriously injured after being hit by a car on the Johor-Singapore Causeway on Sunday. The incident occurred when the driver lost control of their vehicle due to heavy rain and collided with the pedestrian.
Walking has become a popular alternative to driving for some individuals. However, innocent pedestrians sometimes become victims due to the negligence of other road users. This unfortunate incident occurred to an individual crossing the Johor-Singapore Causeway . Media reports revealed that a Malaysia n citizen was hit by a car on the Johor-Singapore Causeway on January 13th. According to Johor Bahru Selatan Police Chief AC Raub Selamat, the incident happened around 5.
40 pm on Sunday, January 12th. The driver lost control of the car due to heavy rain, causing it to skid and collide with the road divider before hitting the pedestrian, he explained in a statement to The Star. The victim, a 24-year-old Malaysian, was walking from Singapore to Malaysia on the Causeway when the incident occurred. A video of the incident shared on Facebook by Malaysia-Singapore Border Crossers (MSBC) shows the car traveling in the opposite direction of the pedestrian, from Malaysia to Singapore. The lack of a barrier separating the roadway and the pedestrian path resulted in the victim being struck and thrown onto the motorcycle lane. The white car involved sustained severe damage, with the hood caved in. As a result, the victim suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA). According to The Star, the two men in the car were Singaporean citizens aged 21 and 23. The passenger in the car also sustained injuries to his left arm, added Raub Selamat. The investigation is ongoing, and the case has been classified under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959. Authorities urge road users to exercise caution while driving, especially during bad weather. Anyone with information about the incident is requested to contact the Johor Bahru Selatan Police Headquarters. This incident raises questions about whether it is safe for pedestrians to walk on the Johor-Singapore Causeway. According to the BestinSingapore website, Malaysia and Singapore have allowed this method since March 26, 2022. However, it is not a common practice among travelers, as there is no dedicated pedestrian path. Pedestrians would take approximately 30 to 40 minutes to walk from Malaysia to the Woodlands MRT Station in Singapore.
