The launch video for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM) omitted mosques, prompting criticism and a response from the Tourism Minister.
The launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM) took place last Monday at the Malaysia Airlines Engineering Complex, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The promotional video showcased popular tourist spots like Petaling Street and Central Market in Kuala Lumpur, Mulu Caves in Sarawak, Langkawi Skywalk in Kedah, Batu Caves in Selangor, and a historic church in Melaka. The video drew criticism, including from Putrajaya MP Datuk Dr.
Radzi Jidin, who questioned why mosques were absent. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing responded that elements of mosque architecture will be included in a more detailed promotional video. Tiong emphasized that the main purpose of the video was to present Malaysia's diversity and uniqueness inclusively. He urged against politicizing the issue and stated that a future video will highlight mosques and other aspects of Malaysia's culture and attractions. Tiong stressed that the initiative aims to promote unity, economic growth, and the country's future. He expressed disappointment over those who turned the issue into a religious and racial debate, urging everyone to focus on unity and mutual respect. Tiong also called for inclusivity, reminding the public that Malaysia is a multiracial nation that values unity.
