Malaysia's Ministry of Transport (MOT) will prioritize addressing the issue of overloaded trucks, particularly through legal reform this year. Minister Anthony Loke stated that the ministry is reviewing amendments and improvements to existing laws, including the Road Transport Act 1987, Land Public Transport Act 2010, and Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act 1987. Loke highlighted the potential for imposing penalties and fines based on the percentage of excess load, as well as examining the responsibilities of consignees (recipients) in cases of overloading. MOT will also collaborate with port authorities and study the framework for legalizing pick-up trucks carrying goods safely within permissible weight limits. Additionally, the ministry plans to reassess policies on the registration and use of 'rebuild' vehicles to ensure only high-integrity, safe, and quality heavy vehicles are permitted on the roads.
