Malaysia's Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced a new punishment for litterbugs: community service that includes cleaning public toilets, sweeping streets, and clearing drains. The minister believes this will be a more effective deterrent than fines.

In an effort to curb littering, Malaysia's Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced a new form of punishment: community service. According to Minister Nga, increasing fines to RM300 or RM500 has proven ineffective as offenders can simply pay the penalty and continue their littering habits. He believes community service will provide a more impactful deterrent by forcing individuals to confront the consequences of their actions.

Offenders could be required to participate in a range of tasks such as cleaning public toilets, sweeping streets, clearing drains, and other similar activities. The minister emphasized the seriousness of this initiative, stating that the government will utilize three specific acts of law to ensure compliance with community service orders: the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672), the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133), and the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171). The program is set to launch in March, with the goal of making Malaysia's streets cleaner through the rehabilitation of litterbugs.Minister Nga's announcement has sparked widespread discussion, with many praising the innovative approach to combating littering. Others have expressed concerns about the potential for abuse and the effectiveness of community service as a long-term solution. Regardless of the varied opinions, the new initiative is a clear signal that the Malaysian government is taking environmental issues seriously and is committed to finding creative solutions to address them.
