The Malaysian Transport Ministry is taking swift action to improve heavy vehicle safety following a fatal accident on the North-South Expressway. A special task force will implement immediate safety measures, while enforcement efforts will be strengthened through collaboration between various agencies.
The Transport Ministry of Malaysia will establish a special task force to tackle heavy vehicle safety concerns. Minister Anthony Loke announced that the task force, led by ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan, will prioritize the immediate implementation of safety measures and policies. This initiative comes after a fatal accident on December 23 involving a tour bus, lorries, a car, and an MPV on the North-South Expressway.
Loke highlighted several key actions, including refining periodic inspections at Puspakom to incorporate critical safety elements like tyres and brakes. The ministry will also bolster enforcement through collaboration with JPJ, PDRM, Apad, and AADK. Expansion of the HS-WIM system for automated load monitoring and improvement of the Awas camera system with a point-to-point speed monitoring mechanism are also on the agenda. Additionally, the ministry plans to review laws like the Road Transport Act 1987 and Land Public Transport Act 2010 to impose stricter penalties for overloading offenses. Competency training for heavy vehicle operators will be enhanced through the ICOP Safety Training
