Malaysia, as the current ASEAN chair, plans to address the issue of electronic waste trafficking at both regional and global levels. The Deputy Minister of MITI emphasizes the need for international collaboration and source country responsibility in curbing this illicit trade.
Malaysia will tackle the issue of electronic waste trafficking at both regional and global levels during its tenure as the ASEAN chair this year. Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Liew Chin Tong highlighted the urgency of addressing this problem, stating that ASEAN needs to accelerate its transition towards a circular economy and low-carbon model while acknowledging the varying capabilities of its member countries.
Liew emphasized that Malaysia cannot single-handedly combat waste trafficking. He stressed the need for collaboration and engagement at both intra- and inter-regional levels to harmonize policies, share expertise, and tackle shared challenges like waste trafficking. He pointed out that source countries, particularly Europe and North America, must take a leading role in curbing waste trafficking at its origin. Liew commended the European Union's efforts in this regard and expressed a desire to strengthen collaboration with the EU and other source countries to effectively address the issue. He urged other source countries to demonstrate greater commitment and take concrete actions. Liew connected waste trafficking solutions with the adoption of a circular economy, including Malaysia's approach to transitioning towards Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes. This ensures producers are responsible for managing their waste. He underscored the security implications of waste trafficking, stating that reducing it contributes to a safer Malaysia, ASEAN, and the world. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) reiterated its commitment to promoting sustainable trade and supporting Malaysia's green transformation
