China's DeepSeek Halts New Registrations After CyberattackDeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, has temporarily halted new user registrations following a massive cyberattack that began on Monday. The app, which surpassed OpenAI's ChatGPT in downloads on Apple's App Store, experienced service disruptions and was unable to accept new users. DeepSeek, developed by a Hangzhou-based company, is reported to rival the capabilities of leading AI companies like Nvidia. The app's success and dominance in Apple's app store also impacted the stock prices of related AI technology giants on Monday. Seen as a low-cost generative AI project, DeepSeek has reportedly reached a technological level comparable to US companies at a significantly lower cost. Analysts previously argued that the US's advantage in producing high-powered chips, along with access restrictions to this technology for China, gave the US an edge in the AI competition. DeepSeek, accessible through both mobile and desktop devices, offers various functions like writing song lyrics, designing personalized developments, or providing recipes based on available kitchen ingredients. However, like other Chinese-made chatbots such as Baidu's Ernie Bot, DeepSeek is also subject to strict censorship, particularly in discussions on political topics.
