Malaysia's telecommunications industry saw positive growth in 5G and internet coverage but slower overall progress compared to other markets. The government selected U Mobile for the second 5G network, citing factors like business plans, customer satisfaction, and contributions to infrastructure projects.
Malaysia's telecommunications industry experienced a significant year in 2024 as the country advanced toward deploying its second 5G network. By the end of October, 5G coverage in populated areas reached 82.1 percent, up from 80.2 percent the previous year, due to the efforts of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB). Simultaneously, internet coverage in populated areas improved to 98.38 percent, an increase from 97.07 percent in 2023.
Despite the exciting developments surrounding the second 5G network, the overall telecommunications sector seemed to progress at a slower pace this year. GlobalData Technology principal analyst Alfie Amir noted that Malaysia's telecommunications sector's advancement has been relatively slow compared to other markets, including neighboring countries. On November 1st, the government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), announced that U Mobile Sdn Bhd would implement the second 5G network in Malaysia. This decision came after a thorough technical and commercial evaluation to select the mobile network operator (MNO) for the project. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the selection of the second 5G network provider was based on various factors, including the MNO's business and technical plans, customer satisfaction and complaint records, and performance in executing other infrastructure projects. This also encompassed contributions to Universal Service Provision (USP) projects, such as JENDELA Phase One and the 4G upgrade initiative, which align with MCMC's commitment to enhancing user experience and service quality. Meanwhile, Alfie suggested that U Mobile's selection as the second network operator is unlikely to significantly impact Malaysia's overall telecommunications market as other operators already offer 5G services through the first network
