Malaysia Sees Rise in Sexual Harassment Cases

The number of sexual harassment cases reported to Malaysian police has increased in 2024, reaching 666 for the first 10 months compared to 529 in 2023 and 488 in 2022. The Women, Family and Community Development Minister emphasized the ministry's commitment to raising awareness about sexual harassment and providing support to victims. The ministry launched a community program to educate the public about their rights and how to address harassment. A Local Social Support Centre was also established to offer psychosocial services and facilitate access to resources for victims.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the number of sexual harassment cases received by police for the first 10 months of 2024 was 666, which was higher than 529 cases in 2023.

"Out of 28 complaints filed, a total of 10 complaints have been heard and given the decision," she said after officiating the Community LOVE and Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy Programme at the Sibu Jaya Community Hall. In the same event, Yayasan Kebajikan Negara also set up a Local Social Support Centre service counter for women, children and other vulnerable groups.
