Diplomatic negotiations are underway between Malaysia and the United States regarding the potential release of two Malaysian citizens currently held at Guantanamo Bay. The newly appointed US Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan, confirmed that US authorities are in contact with Malaysian officials. The two men, Mohammed Farik Amin and Mohammed Nazir Lep, were captured in Thailand in 2003 and recently pleaded guilty to charges related to the 2002 Bali bombings. They were sentenced to five years each and are expected to testify against the mastermind behind the attacks.

Kagan was asked whether there were any negotiations between the Home Minister and the United States over the matter. Also, under the plea bargain, both will have to testify against Encep Nurjaman aka Hambali, the former leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah movement – an affiliate of Al-Qaeda – and the mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombings.Both have been held in confinement in various Central Intelligence Agency facilities in the United States since the summer of 2003, and in Guantanamo since 2006.
