The population of the Malayan tiger (Panthera Tigris Jaksoni) in Perak, Malaysia, is believed to have increased due to awareness campaigns and anti-poaching operations. According to the Perak Director of the Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Department (PERHILITAN), Yusoff Shariff, the number of tigers has risen compared to the 37 recorded during the National Tiger Survey from 2016 to 2020, which focused on the Belum-Temenggor area in Hulu Perak, one of the three main habitats of the Malayan tiger in Malaysia. While the exact number will be announced by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Yusoff confirmed that conservation efforts have led to a population increase. Despite the positive trend, tigers still face threats, including natural challenges like food scarcity caused by a virus that has decimated wild boar populations, a key food source for tigers. This has resulted in tigers venturing out of their habitats, leading to increased human-wildlife conflict.
