The value of livestock trade in Malaysia surged by 23.2 percent in 2023, driven by strong domestic and industrial demand for livestock products.

Petaling Jaya: The value of livestock trade in Malaysia increased by 23.2 percent or RM254.7 million to RM1.4 billion in 2023, according to the Malaysia Trade Statistics Review (MTSR) 2024 by the Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM). This growth reflects the rising demand for livestock and related products to meet domestic consumption and industry needs. Chief Statistician, Datuk Seri Dr.

Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that the MTSR 2024 synthesizes the trading performance of Malaysia for the livestock industry by focusing on selected livestock such as chickens, eggs, cattle, sheep, goats, ducks, and pigs. He said this analysis aims to strengthen a more comprehensive understanding of the industry's contribution to the economy and its role in shaping a holistic economic perspective. “The livestock industry in Malaysia has recorded significant development and growth in recent years, contributing significantly to the country's agriculture sector. “The poultry and egg sector remains the largest contributor to the livestock subsector and plays a vital role in meeting the protein needs of the Malaysian people. “The export value of chicken reached RM726.7 million in 2023, an increase of 27.0 percent or RM154.4 million compared to last year,” he said in a statement. Meanwhile, he said, egg production in Malaysia continues to record encouraging performance, with export value reaching RM671.2 million in 2023, meeting regional market demand. Mohd Uzir informed that the ruminant industry in Malaysia is still dominated by the external sector, with the value of live cattle imports rising sharply to meet domestic demand, with import value increasing from RM82.8 million in 2022 to RM108.7 million in 2023. “The import value of livestock for sheep and goats reached RM27.2 million in 2023, with Australia and Indonesia remaining as the main exporters to Malaysia.
