The Malaysian government has decided to uphold the existing 1962 Water Agreement with Singapore, emphasizing the need to consider the implications of any changes to the current water sale rate to Singapore. Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir highlighted that despite the low rate of three cents per 1,000 gallons for raw water sales to Singapore, it has significant economic benefits for Malaysia. Johor currently buys an average of 16 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water from Singapore at 50 cents per 1,000 gallons, far exceeding the 5 MGD stipulated in the agreement.
