The Malaysian men's doubles pair of Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King lost their opening match at the 2025 Malaysia Open Badminton Championships.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's hopes were dashed again as the men's doubles pair, Arif Junaidi - Yap Roy King , fell to the experienced Kim Won Ho - Seo Seung Jae in the first round of the 2025 Malaysia Open Badminton Championships at Axiata Arena earlier today. Ranked 23rd in the world, Arif-Roy King suffered a straight-set defeat to the Korean duo, 17-21, 11-21, in a 44-minute clash. Making their debut at the Super 1000 tournament, Arif-Roy King's performance wasn't disappointing.

They put up a strong fight against the Korean pair, who had an edge in every aspect. In the first set, particularly, Arif-Roy King tried to match the pace displayed by Won Ho-Seung Jae. However, some errors, including hitting the ball out of bounds, gave easy points to their opponents. Faced with a new international opponent, Arif-Roy King relied more on defense and struggled to keep up with Won Ho-Seung Jae's calculated attacks. Despite being a relatively new pairing, both players in the Korean duo are well-established names in badminton. Won Ho is a silver medalist from the 2024 Paris Olympics, while Seung Jae is a former world champion. This defeat follows the first-round exit of the world No. 3 men's doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani, yesterday

Liu Ying cites their impressive performance in reaching the final of the recent World Tour Finals as evidence of their potential. She anticipates that their absence of several top pairings in the tournament will bolster their chances of advancing to the semi-finals or even the final. However, Liu Ying acknowledges that the added pressure of competing on home soil and facing strong challengers will make their path to victory challenging.
