The amended Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) in Malaysia is designed to tackle rising cybercrime, including online bullying, scams, and gambling, according to Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil. He emphasized that the law's focus is on criminal offenses and that freedom of speech, enshrined in the Federal Constitution, remains protected. The amendment clarifies the definition of 'obscenity' as 'excessive obscenity' to prevent broad interpretations and provides more detailed explanations for court proceedings. Fahmi also warned against the spread of false information, particularly about the Royal Institution, and highlighted the possibility of stronger penalties for certain offenses under the revised Act.
