The Malaysian national badminton team will be competing in the 2025 Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championship with a squad comprised mainly of backup players. This decision was made by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) due to the packed World Tour calendar, which necessitates rest and recovery for the main players. The team will be led by senior pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, along with other rising stars like Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin. While the women's doubles and singles are slightly less strong, BAM is confident that this opportunity will provide valuable experience for the younger players and contribute to the overall balance of the national team.
Without the presence of their star players, the national badminton squad will be led by the senior pair ranked No. 4 in the world, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai at the 2025 Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championship, from February 11-16 in Qingdao, China. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided not to field Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Lee Zii Jia.
According to the list released by BAM yesterday, besides Soon Huat-Shevon, Malaysia will be strengthened by the presence of the rising mixed doubles pair currently ranked 18th in the world, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin. Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 13 in the world) and Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King (No. 20 in the world) will take on the challenge for the men's doubles, while the men's singles will be led by Leong Jun Hao (No. 27 in the world) and Justin Hoh (No. 53 in the world). The challenge for the women's sector is slightly worrying because the national squad is only reinforced with support players, namely the women's doubles which are split, Tan Zhing Yi-Cheng Su Hui and the world number 66 pair, Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee. For women's singles, Malaysia has no choice but to field K. Letshanaa (No. 59 in the world) and Wong Ling Ching (No. 95 in the world), who are the best players owned by BAM at this time. Without the presence of the main players, BAM's Coaching Director Rexy Mainaky gave the reason that the World Tour calendar was too crowded, leading to the decision. 'The main players have to face a crowded match calendar and this tournament offers the best platform for the support players to shine and gain invaluable experience,' he said. He said that it is very important to strike a balance in the national team by combining senior and young players. He said that the decision was made by BAM after carefully considering the benefits that the team would gain and finally, the combination of old and new faces is the best option. 'We only made this decision after discussing and finally reaching a consensus, the combination with experienced players is believed to give these young players opportunities they rarely have. 'If not now, when will they be given such an opportunity? For me, it is very important for us to give as much experience as possible to the players in this group,' said the former world champion from Indonesia. He said that the focus now is to prepare the team for the tournament and promised that the national squad will only give the best. Malaysia was drawn in Group B, which is considered a 'group of death', facing challenges against Indonesia, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. Their achievement in 2023 reached the quarterfinals before losing to the two-time champion, China.
