Malaysia's men's singles coach, K. Yogendran, acknowledges the team's strategy fell short against Hong Kong in the opening match of the 2025 Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championships in China.
Malaysia 's men's singles coach, K. Yogendran, acknowledged that the strategy didn't quite work out. Despite the Malaysia n players having a better head-to-head record against Hong Kong , the team failed to secure a victory in the opening match of the 2025 Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championships in Qiangdao, China, today. Malaysia , drawn in Group B, lost 2-3 to Hong Kong , who fielded their strongest lineup compared to the national team's 'B squad' in this edition.
Yogendran said, as predicted, Hong Kong fielded their main squad, and what Malaysia could do was choose the best players to face the country.“We knew our chances were 50-50, the mixed doubles actually became the deciding factor. In the team meeting, we chose to field Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin because their record against Hong Kong is better.Justin Hoh also has a good record against Hong Kong players, compared to Leong Jun Hao, he has never won against Lee Cheuk Yiu in their two previous encounters,” he said in an interview after the match today. He said the experience of Hong Kong players had created a gap between the national representatives, which led to Malaysia's defeat.“In the mixed doubles, Tang Chun Man is a very experienced player, he managed to recover from the first set loss. Justin, what I can say is that he faced more experienced players and his opponent's ranking was also higher. Justin played well in the first set, but his game started to decline in the second set,” he added.Commenting on the women's singles, Yogendran said, K. Letshanaa played quite well today and managed to score a point for Malaysia.
