The Malaysian government has issued a ban on six book titles deemed potentially harmful to public morality. The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) announced the ban through the Government Gazette under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, effective December 19, 2024. The banned books include 'A Million Kisses In Your Lifetime' by Monica Murphy, 'Lose You To Find Me' by Erik J. Brown, 'Punai' by Asyraf Bakti, 'Scattered Showers' by Rainbow Rowell, 'When Everything Feels Like The Movie' by Raziel Reid, and 'What If It’s Us' by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera. The ban is based on the principle of prevention and control before any harm or threat occurs, aiming to prevent the spread of ideologies or movements that contradict Malaysian culture and values. The KDN emphasized that the ban aligns with Section 7(1) of the Act 301, which prohibits the printing, importing, reproducing, publishing, selling, distributing, or possessing any works that may be detrimental to public morality.
