O'Rourke's appointment is a blow to Derry, who still don't have a manager and it won't have gone unnoticed in places like Dublin, Kerry and Donegal
In a brief social media post on Tuesday evening, Tyrone GAA said: "At this evening’s meeting of Coiste Chontae Thír Eoghain, Malachy O’Rourke was ratified as the Tyrone Senior Football Manager for a three year term. We look forward to working closely with Malachy and his backroom team, and wish them well in their roles.
But Tyrone have the 57-year-old retired teacher - and the consequences for everyone else will be felt over the next two summers. It was O’Rourke’s first year in Monaghan and the county’s first Ulster title in a quarter of a century. They backed it up again in 2015 and haven’t won an Anglo-Celt Cup since.
That looks a long way off right now with no manager and Tyrone snapping up the outstanding candidate.
