The Makati City RTC has found Trillanes guilty of libel for his April 2015 statement accusing then Makati mayor Junjun Binay of graft and corruption by bribing magistrates to stop the first suspension order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman.
In a 31-page decision, Judge Andres Soriano of the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 148 fined Trillanes P100,000 and ordered him to pay Binay P500,000 in moral damages on top of the cost of the lawsuit.
In April 2015, Trillanes claimed in media interviews that the justices of the Sixth Division of the Court of Appeals were bribed with millions of pesos to stop Binay’s suspension for graft and corruption for the allegedly anomalous construction of a Makati City Hall parking building.
