A major arctic cold outbreak is going to be the atmosphere's gift to much of the U.S. this Christmas.
This bitter cold air first arrives from Canada into the Northern Plains Sunday, oozes its way into the upper Midwest by Tuesday, then begins its plunge down the Front Range of the Rockies and central Plains Wednesday.
Strong winds beginning Wednesday could lead to dangerously low wind chills in the Plains as this arctic front plunges. The arctic front will nosedive through the Southern Plains – including all of Texas – and the Mississippi Valley next Thursday, then the rest of the Southeast – including all of Florida – next Thursday night into Friday.
For now, it looks like this cold outbreak will last through Christmas weekend, and only gradually ease off in the Southeast early in the final week of 2022. Snow with arctic fronts, while generally fluffy and dry, could also come down in quick bursts known asThen, computer forecast models increasingly suggest low pressure could intensify somewhere over the Northeast or offshore late next week. If such a storm occurs, that could bring heavy snow and high winds to parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast later next week, just before Christmas weekend.
