A MAGNITUDE 4.8 earthquake hit Surigao del Norte early Tuesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs chief Teresito 'Toto' Bacolcol said Intensity 5 was felt by residents in Surigao City during the event that took place around 1:08 a.m. some 13 kilometers northwest of the municipality of San Francisco, also in the same province.
Tectonic in origin, the tremor had a depth of focus of 13kms, Bacolcol said.Phivolcs said Instrumental Intensity 5 was recorded over Surigao City and Intensity 1 in City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.Bacolcol said damage to property was likely although aftershocks were not expected.
