Magic Johnson said Monday he stepped down as Lakers president of basketball operations last month because he felt betrayed by general manager Rob Pelinka and that he didn’t have the decision-making power he thought he’d have in the role.

but was frustrated because Lakers Chief Operating Officer Tim Harris, who mostly handles the team’s business affairs, was brought in on those decisions and wanted to keep Walton.

“It’s time for me to go. I got things happening and being said behind my back, and I don’t have the power I thought I have to make the decisions. I told them when it’s not fun for me and when I think I don’t have the decision making power that I thought I had, then I got to step aside.

In addition to Pelinka and Harris, Johnson said he had to be vigilant about Joey and Jesse Buss, who he said had aspirations of one day running the team’s basketball operations.“I had to monitor the brothers because Joey and Jesse wanted more involvement and power,” Johnson said. “I didn’t mind doing that because they’re good guys, but I had to sit them down and say, ‘Hey, listen, I’m going to help you guys mature and get better.
