This year marks the sixth year of the mcpf_birmingham. This year, the Magic City Poetry Festival is offering another robust month of free literary events:
The month-long celebration of the literary art commenced Saturday morning with Alabama poet laureate Ashley Jones’ remarks at the 60-year
Jones’ poem was a selection from her debut book, “Magic City Gospel.” Published in 2017, the collection of poetry is Jones’ love song to the history and culture of Birmingham. The verses were especially fitting — police used batons and police dogs to attack the demonstrators who marched on that Palm Sunday in 1963:fill up the hose and set the dogs loose? Could they smellin that raw Birmingham flesh -- we germinated.”
