“As women, we’re used to working with less,” TheLostDaughter director Maggie Gyllenhaal bluntly told THR of female directors’ current situation in Hollywood
“We needed another day and a half,” Gyllenhaal admitted of the shoot. “I like wildness. I don’t like insanity. And there was a little bit of insanity.”
“What was frustrating for me was, in that moment, there wasn’t a list or even a person that I could really look to where I could see myself,” Bravo said of her time studying directing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts as a teenager. Bravo nodded along. “I was so worried about my own place. I just am less worried now,” she reflected., Gyllenhaal frequently reminded her actresses, especially the younger ones, that they’re “successful” and to approach their performances as “starving, hungry women.” But not greedy. She includes herself among them. “I actually don’t know any women who aren’t starving.”
