Review: In 'Machiavelli for Women,' Stacey Vanek Smith writes that women can take a page from Niccolò Machiavelli's 16th-century masterwork, “The Prince,” to succeed in the 21st-century office
Stacey Vanek Smith probably had a terrific elevator pitch for her debut book, “Machiavelli for Women: Defend Your Worth, Grow Your Ambition, and Win the Workplace.” After all, Niccolò Machiavelli, generally associated with cunning, duplicity and the personality trait that bears his name, would seem an unlikely inspiration for today’s professional women. But Ms. Smith turns to his 16th-century masterwork, “The Prince,” to help women succeed in the 21st-century office.
Though it looms large in some sections and recedes in others, the Machiavelli angle is clever. The Italian theorist distinguished inheriting princes from conquering princes, and he considered leadership to be easier for those who gain their kingdoms through birthright.
