A senior MACC officer denies that his rapid promotion was due to a favorable 1MDB investigation for former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Fikri Ab Rahim also refutes claims that the agency’s Saudi Arabia trip in 2015 was part of a scheme to aid Najib.

A high-ranking officer of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission ( MACC ) today refuted claims that his rapid promotion within the agency was a consequence of his investigation, which was allegedly advantageous to the former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Fikri Ab Rahim, 50, who currently holds the position of Director of the Anti-Money Laundering and Forfeiture of Properties Division of the MACC, also denied assertions that the MACC's visit to Saudi Arabia in November 2015 was part of a scheme to assist the former premier. 'My promotion was decided by the MACC chief commissioner at that time, Tan Sri Abu Kassim,' he stated during cross-examination by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib in Najib's trial concerning allegations of misappropriating RM2.3 billion of 1MDB funds.Fikri acknowledged that he 'does get promoted rather quickly.' Ahmad Akram pointed out that within just 11 to 12 years, Fikri had been promoted to the JUSA C (Jawatan Utama Sector Awam C) level due to his work quality, becoming the first in his team to achieve this rank. During re-examination by Najib's lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Fikri clarified that his promotion occurred while the investigation into 1MDB was still underway. 'I was a Grade 54 officer during the Saudi Arabia trip. I was promoted to JUSA C in 2017. I don't think Datuk Seri Najib had anything to do with my promotion,' he asserted. On October 30 last year, Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ordered Najib to defend himself after determining that the prosecution had successfully established a prima facie case against him. Najib faces 25 charges, including four counts of misusing his position to receive RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds as bribes and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same amount
