Often, sexual harassment and assault victims choose not to speak up due to fear of pushback, victim blaming and more.
NGO, the National Union of Bank Employees Malaysia , has been taking to their Facebook page to highlight this incident, which involves a bank employee being fired from the bank she worked at after she had reported her superior for alleged sexual harassment. In their most recent post, they wrote, “Why is punishing the victim of sexual harassment? Instead of supporting the employee who reported serious sexual harassment, suspended, docked her pay and then fired her.
“What reason did give for firing her? ‘Insubordination’ – for refusing yet another ‘interview’ after already filing her complaints. This isn’t insubordination; it’s a targeted punishment for daring to speak up!”With this, NUBE demands that the bank correct its actions. This image is for illustration purposes only.
“Why does attack the victim instead of protecting her? A bank that claims ‘zero tolerance’ for harassment has shown zero tolerance for a victim trying to seek justice. is making an example out of her, showing all employees that reporting abuse is a risk to your livelihood,” “We demand to reverse this cruel decision, reinstate the victim and start acting like the institution it claims to be,” they added. In another post, they also shared that the accused in this incident has even apparently been formally charged in court for his alleged sexual harassment.
“Despite the court formally charging with sexual harassment, has dismissed the victim on unjust and ridiculous grounds,” NUBE explained. Also read: Lawyer Urges Transparency from Govt After 1MDB Spent Over RM300 MILLION in Just Legal Fees Since 2019
