Police department is recommending seven officers be assigned to the event at cost of nearly $8,000
National City may impose a hefty fee on the organizers of the Highland Avenue lowrider cruises, including $8,000 for police services.
Organizers who are lobbying to repeal the cruising ban were granted a permit in April to cruise from 6-9 p.m. once a month. The Coalition paid a $272 processing fee. They planned to police themselves because cruising was sometimes criminalized. They also couldn’t afford law enforcement’s help with traffic control, according to members during anThe challenge came after 9 p.m. when Coalition members and volunteers tried to end the event but found themselves struggling past 10 p.m.
Coalition members commented Tuesday during a City Council meeting that they could not foot the bill and were worried about the future of the trial cruising period. “We wanted to clarify that the cruises will not be eliminated and secondly, there aren’t any resources or requirements that are being asked of the United Lowrider Coalition that are not being asked of any other holders,” said Sotelo-Solis.
