“There’s been community support. People have been bringing in old boards. Even today, somebody brought in a board.”Skateboarding’s first mention in the local press was a StarPhoenix story on April 24, 1965, bearing the headline “Latest craze to hit Canada.”
A few dozen skateboards had been sold in Saskatoon the previous year, the story noted, but local dealers had ordered “hundreds of boards” in 1965, preparing for the anticipated rush.Article content Tucker occupies a store space that once housed Totally Rad Skateboards, a business venture, with its own 11-foot vertical ramp, that is remembered fondly by those who have been around a while.
“Some of these boards are worth a lot of money. Some of them … we have old Woolco boards. That’s what I started on. You’d buy it at Zellers or Woolco, and they were replicas of the pro boards you could get. The pro boards back then were, like, 400 bucks, which was a lot for a kid.”
