Manila was the opening stop of the Asian leg of Itzy’s first-ever world tour, “Checkmate,” which was launched last year in support of the group’s fifth EP of the same title. And the five young performers couldn’t have asked for a better welcome to set the tone for the rest of their Asian swing.

“You can’t imagine how surprised we are that you filled this place up,” Lia said. “We didn’t expect this many people.”Debuting in 2019, Itzy is one of the most popular and decorated fourth generation K-pop acts. That same year, the band clinched the highly coveted “Rookie Grand Slam” by sweeping the new artist of the year and similar categories at the Golden Disc Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Seoul Music Awards.

At one point, Yeji took off her in-ear monitor, all the better to hear the fans. Ryujin, on the other hand, had to hush the crowd so she could be heard. The show was barely halfway, and she wanted the fans to “save energy” for the rest of the night. But as it turned out, she had nothing to worry about—the fans had almost three years’ worth of energy in the tank.
